A EULOGY

What an honor to help a client write a eulogy for her dear friend, who was also a community leader in Chapel Hill. After spinning her wheels a bit, my client reached out for writing help. I interviewed my client for 45 minutes, and I combined the resulting notes with her existing notes to create a unique, fitting eulogy for her dear friend.

This kind of writing is very satisfying, and when a client trusts me to write something as personal as a eulogy, I treat the task with extra care. Here, I imagined her offering the eulogy to a crowd of grieving family members, friends, and colleagues, and I recognized what a deep privilege it was for my client to speak at the service, and also that it felt risky, in part because there are no do overs with something like this.

The resulting speech was in my client’s voice and deeply personal, with just the right amount of good humor. I could not have delivered this eulogy, but I helped my client represent her own grief and helped her celebrate this amazing person in ways that only she could.
