CONTENT + DESIGN, SO HAPPY TOGETHER
How do content and design work together? Which one is more important? Neither. Gone are the days when words could stand alone. Also, though, if you’re offering something of substance, images and design won’t suffice either. It’s about balancing the two, making sure the design reinforces your messaging and that the site is laid out in a way that encourages engagement.
A RAFFLE TO REMEMBER
Even small-scale fundraising efforts can be more productive through great communication. Writing and design go hand-in-hand, and experienced professionals know what language to use, how much of it, and how to use design elements to compel people to engage with content. Here’s a case study of a small fundraiser I did on my own, here in Carrboro and Chapel Hill, NC.
IMPACT FOR EMPACT
When building a business, folks can forget to evolve. For a while, it's only about recruiting clients, but eventually you have to make time to solidify your retention strategy so your customers stick around. Does your website offer a place for current customers? Does your content writing have a consistent tone that makes readers feel connected to your company? At Economy of Language, we can help ensure that your communications don't leave any of your customers behind.
ARTSY ARCHITECTURAL VIDEOS
I had a great time turning still photos of these architect-designed homes into captivating, tidy two-minute videos for a modernist architectural prize. My work included design, interview, writing, editing, and video, which all came together to perfectly reflect the talent, value, and professionalism of my client.
LOI SHINE UP
Ah, yes, the dreaded resume and cover letter. Even when a job doesn’t require top-notch writing skills, you still have to submit a top-notch letter. This is where I come in. I took 2 hours to turn this client’s blah blah blah into a professional, interesting, and focused missive. And her resume went from visual gibberish, to a document that guides it’s viewers with text elements and hierarchy of information. Good writing. Bada bing bada boom:)
A EULOGY
Writing is a tricky thing, and not everyone can do it, or do it under pressure, so when a client asked for help writing a eulogy for a friend and Chapel Hill community leader, I prioritized it, despite having a full docket. This client knows her strengths, and she knows mine as a writer, and I was honored to create a eulogy for her, in her own voice, and one that only she could deliver, to help her and the other grieving family members, friends, and colleagues memorialize this important person.
BRANDING BOOYAH FOR A SMALL BIZ
A Carrboro therapist hired me to rebrand his business, including a new name, logo, brand kit, website, and related content and design. What an awesome project, to transform a run-of-the-mill, sage green, sort of sad site into an online home for a business that now communicates its confidence, know-how and empathetic vibe.
STAFF BIOS THAT AREN’T BLAH
Reworking staff bios is the kind of simple change that can make a real difference. Bios are one more way to tell clients what kind of experience they’ll have with your business, and you certainly don’t want them thinking you’re just like everybody else. Nobody wants to read a resume in paragraph form. People want to get a feel for a person, to help them decide if they want to work with them. Regurgitated history isn’t enough. Powerful bios will communicate values, energy, and outlook in ways unique to each individual.
GOOD ESSAY TO GREAT ESSAY
My client, a PhD scientist fluent in Mandarin and English, hired me to edit (developmental and copy) the two essays she submitted with her application to UNC's MBA program. She now considers them her personal vision statements. Excellent.
AN ARCHITECT’S LIST
My client, an esteemed architect in Carrboro, hired me to rewrite her website content, tidy up her site layout, create legally binding electronic contracts, and create multiple submission packets for architectural prizes, including videos to showcase her work.
NAUGHTY NOVELLA NEEDS SOME NUANCE
OO-la-la, I offered some sweeping developmental changes, along with tight copy editing for this saucy 25,000-word story.
LITTLE WOMEN / BIG PRODUCTION
Little Women / Big Production! For this I created fresh designs for posters and programs, and I used the design to create a 30-slide Powerpoint to be projected on stage for credits and sponsor thank yous. Love this type of work!
FORMATTING FOR FINANCIAL SERVICES
A financial advisor needed a training document that would communicate his company’s professional culture to new internal stakeholders. Done and done.
REAL CONTENT FOR REALTY FIRM
A boutique firm here in Carrboro needed help communicating just how unique their approach is and how truly ethical and dedicated they are. Writing fresh copy for real estate is no easy task, but we went from interviews to drafts to finals in no time flat.
CYBERSECURITY WEBSITE
This cybersecurity firm in Tampa needed a whole new website. Ground up sitemap, design, and development, not to mention all new content. They have an intentionally built two-in-one site now, and their poised to grow their business, knowing that potential customers will find a site that is ready for them.
